Noisi - Find New Adventures

A research based project with the goal of having college students build connections with their community, encourage a sense of togetherness, and strengthen community bonds. Fun events that people can attend really can make an unfamiliar city feel like home. Originally based on the University of Illinois Urbana-Chamapaign campus, this is something that could be adapted to many different college campuses everywhere. Stemming from being a big fan of pop-up events, art events, food vendor fairs, etc. but not always knowing when or where they’d be happening, I decided a change needed to happen. Being an art student myself, I was lucky to be able to see many corkboards with flyers that did advertise different events that I could attend, or clubs that someone could join. However some of my friends who were not art students didn’t get to learn about those same opportunities. If they’re art fans or want to support local artists, they had no way of knowing because they weren’t made aware otherwise.

One thing to note is that for this project my professor had asked all of their students to test out new design tools, in this case the entire class had to utilize AI design tools as per the requirement for the project. Throughout each stage of the design for Noisi, AI had to be used to reach the requirements needed. Its intended purpose for Noisi is for ideation.

Beginning with early prototyping, the project’s initial idea was to utilize space that was already existing on campus to host events. Wanting to be in a fairly centralized location and figuring out how to have good promotion for the events were the first big struggles. For my first iteration of this project, I mainly focused on how people could learn about the many events that could happen on campus. Most UIUC students have the “Illinois” app which allows them to check many different things relating to student life. I figured a good start would be updating the Illinois app as most people already had it, and it would make everything focused on the UIUC campus. This idea quickly changed into something that wasn’t so directly connected to the UIUC Illinois app.

Moving on to the mid-level prototypes, the concept of Noisi was really starting to take shape. It was moving away from being digital only, to having its brand be seen in real spaces. The first thing that I wanted to design for was bus stops, a big part of getting around UIUC’s campus is using the bus system that is available for all students. Since the entire point of Noisi is to inform students about fun events on campus it seemed like a great place to learn about Noisi. In this case, the poster I designed is talking about a pottery painting event with plants. The goal with the mid-level prototypes were to showcase how a potential event could be promoted throughout a college campus. It also showcases the brand identity, which aims to be very fun and inviting with bright colors, fun shapes, and cool fonts all of which draw to the visual appeal of Noisi.

Lastly that leads to the high-level prototypes and designs. At this stage, the brand identity, brand goals, and overall direction was decided and Noisi could be expanded upon. A flyer is made with the goal of being easily accessible so that many people can learn about Noisi, and a decision was made to make a separate app that people can download.  Initially I was opposed to making a new app because from my research a lot of people didn’t like having too many apps on their phones however, a major goal for this project was the fact that it could be adapted to many different college campuses an app seemed like the best choice and it made it a lot easier for people to interact directly with Noisi. A Figma prototype of the potential Noisi app was made to show the layout, personal interests, and how someone would interact with the app.
